What’s the Difference Between a Boiler and a Furnace?

Boiler of furnace: What’s the difference? There are unique advantages and disadvantages to a home with a boiler system compared to a home with a forced air furnace. The two heating systems work in markedly different ways. A boiler heats water, which flows through a series of pipes in the home. As the water flows it radiates heat throughout the house. A furnace, on the other hand, heats air, which is then moved through the house using a blower motor.

Both systems have proven to be remarkably durable over the years. Most manufacturers offer warranties of ten years or longer. However, there are different maintenance requirements for both.

A forced air furnace will need the air filter either changed or cleaned on a regular basis. This can be as often as once a month or as little as once a quarter. A boiler on the other hand will need to have excess air bled from the system periodically. This will vary from system to system but a good sign that the system needs to be bled is when rooms are no longer heating properly.

One of the great advantages to a boiler system is the ability to heat different zones in your home. A boiler system will generally have thermostats in every room, which can be set individually. Instead of heating the whole house, you only have to heat the rooms you are using, when you are using them.

A forced air system generally has a single, centrally located thermostat, which controls the heating for the entire house. Boiler systems also tend to leave the house with a higher, natural humidity than forced air systems which often require a separate humidifier either be attached to the system directly or run somewhere in the house.

There are definite differences between a boiler and a furnace. Only you can decide which system is best for you.

Here at J Downs Plumbing in New Jersey, we know that some plumbing issues come as a nasty surprise. When something happens in your home, it’s important that you know how to turn your water main off. The last thing you want is to cause any damage to your home during a repair or DIY installation. Below you’ll find easy steps to turn of your water.

  1. Find the Emergency Shut-Off

We recommend finding your emergency shut-off before any accident happens. That way, you’ll be ready if any issues do arise in your home. Typically you’ll find the shut-off in the basement, inside of a closet. It is also usually on the side of the house that is closest to the street where the meter is. Of course, it’s not always going to be this simple. If you have trouble finding it, don’t hesitate to give your local plumber a call.

  1. Get the Tools You Need

If you have an older shut-off, you may need a wrench in order to turn it. Be prepared and bring the equipment you need with you. If your shut-off is in a dark corner, a flashlight can also be helpful to ensure you can see what you’re doing.

  1. Turn the Valve Off

There are a few different types of shut-off valves. For some, you just do a quarter-turn to the right. Others need to be turned several times until you feel resistance. Make sure that you turn yours completely off.

  1. Test Your Water

Turn on a faucet and make sure that your water has stopped running before you start on a project. Usually, water will run for a few seconds before slowly stopping.

While your water is off, there are a few other things we suggest turning off as well. First, turn your water heater off, and turn the water heater’s valve off. Second, turn your electrical or gas off. These are extra safety measures that our team at Best Plumbing always follows when completing work on homes around Seattle.

If your home project doesn’t go as planned or you are in need of assistance with this process, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
